Putting our Residents First This report supports the following Council objectives of: Our People. Financial Cost None. Relevant Select Committee Children, Families and Education Select Committee. Current Electoral Ward(s) All. RECOMMENDATIONS That the Cabinet Member for Children, Families and E ducation approves the next set of school term dates to be published for the academic years of 2024/25, 2025/26, 2026/27. Reasons for recommendation This will ensure that maintained schools are open to teach pupils for 190 days and are required to set an additional 5 inset (teacher training) days per academic year within the framework provided, totalling to 195 school days. Alternative options considered and rejected None, however, the Cabinet Member could choose alternate term dates in consultation with officers and schools. Cabinet Member Report – 27 September 2022 Part 1 - Public OFFICIAL-SENSITIVE SUPPORTING INFORMATION Maintained schools are required to be open for 195 days per academic year. Schools can use 5 of these days as inset days to train teachers. Pupils therefore need to be in schools for 190 days per academic year. By setting term dates in advance, this allows school leader s and governors to plan their inset days with additional notice. Staff and parents/ guardians will also benef it by enabling early holiday planning and this reduces the number of errors made with term date clashes to improve attendance. Hillingdon has consulted with other London Boroughs to ensure that our term dates are coordinated regionally. RESIDENT BENEFIT & CONSULTATION To ensure all residents with school age children or who work in schools can plan effectively using the forward plan of term dates. CORPORATE CONSIDERATIONS Corporate Finance Corporate Finance has reviewed this report and concurs that there are no direct financial implications associated within the recommendations. Legal Term dates are determined by school employers . The local authority is the employer for community, voluntary-controlled, community special or maintained nursery schools. The Education (School Day and School Year) (England) Regulations 1999 require l ocal authority - maintained schools to be open for at least 380 sessions (190 days) during a school year. There are no other legal issues arising from this report. BACKGROUND PAPERS NIL.
